EDR is proud to announce that the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Commission, the City of Niagara Falls, a Private Client in Skaneateles, NY, and our firm were honored by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) New York State Upstate Chapter at their annual awards program ceremony held Friday, February 3, 2017 at Sky Armory in Downtown Syracuse, NY.

The purpose of the ASLA Awards Program is to recognize a full-spectrum of innovative projects and efforts executed by individuals, firms, agencies, and academic institutions. The criteria for judging these categories included, but was not limited to: relation to context; functionalism; environmental responsibility and sustainability; relevance to the profession, the public, and the environment; clarity of communication; quality of graphics, execution; research and analysis, and methods of inquiry.   The 2016 Program Jury was comprised of ASLA members from the Indiana State Chapter.

  • The Jury recognized the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Area Management Plan with a 2016 Honor Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation. In their words, “We are pleased to recommend the Honor Award for this submittal due to its strength of process, its fostering of a cooperative spirit of community members and the many disciplines within the project team, and its success in uniting the community to discover and celebrate their common heritage.   The project demonstrated the ability of landscape architects to not only stitch together the physical places of the present, but also to connect the people of a community to their past.  The attention to even the finest details of the story as told from the local perspective demonstrated the commitment of the landscape architect to providing a final product that will empower the community to achieve their dream of properly recognizing such an important component of their cultural heritage.”
  • They also recognized a Private Residential Project in Skaneateles, NY, with a 2016 Merit Award for Excellence in Residential Design. According to the Jury, “This design was well-executed and featured many clever solutions to the challenging project parameters.  The designer utilized their skill set as a landscape architect in successfully navigating the many regulatory requirements to deliver the desired landscape for the experiences envisioned by the client. The designer also showed technical prowess with successful implementation of design details over a lengthy construction process.  Finally, the landscape architect showed their commitment to the long-term success and enjoyment of the property with the creation of a maintenance manual for their clients.”
