Congratulations to the City of Albany on the formal designation of two Brownfield Opportunity Areas (BOAs) given by the New York State Department of State. The BOA Program provides communities with grant funding and technical assistance to develop area-wide, community-driven plans to guide the transformation of brownfields and other underutilized sites into productive and vibrant spaces.
The project included developing two Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) Nomination Studies simultaneously. One for the 183-acre North Warehouse District and the second for the 23-acre South Waterfront District. Both studies lay the groundwork for a more vibrant, resilient, and livable waterfront for the future.
Developed with broad public and stakeholder input, the studies contain a thorough description of existing conditions, opportunities, and reuse potential for properties located throughout both BOAs. The emphasis was on the identification and reuse potential of strategic sites that could be catalysts for revitalization.
This designation marks a significant step forward for Albany, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact and continued revitalization these plans will bring to the community.
EDR was the project manager/coordinator, lead author, planning and public engagement specialists, and urban designers, supported by a multidisciplinary team of market and real estate specialists, engineering experts, and traffic experts.
