Village of Trumansburg Comprehensive Plan Update and Zoning Revision

Village of Trumansburg
Trumansburg, NY

EDR has assisted the Village of Trumansburg in Tompkins County since 2019 with planning services, starting with a thorough review of its existing comprehensive plan and the preparation of a recommended process for updating the existing plan and revising zoning regulations to align with those changes. The Village established a Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Revision Committee (CPZRC) to work with EDR in preparing the modifications to the plan and land use regulations.

The Village of Trumansburg is located approximately 10 miles northwest of the City of Ithaca in the Town of Ulysses along the western shore of Cayuga Lake in the heart of the Finger Lakes winery region. The Village consists of a variety of late 19th and early 20th-century buildings and homes with architectural styles that represent the rich history of this relatively small rural community. Many landmark buildings along Main Street and neighborhood residences are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The process for developing the Comprehensive Plan Update included an extensive stakeholder outreach plan to elicit information from diverse perspectives in goal setting and creating an updated vision of the community for the future. Topics addressed during the process included community character, housing, economic development, climate change, recreation, land use, transportation, and public infrastructure and services. Since the adoption of the plan by the Village Board of Trustees in 2021, the CPZRC and EDR have kept the momentum up and continued working together on zoning revisions. Topics of particular interest include facilitating infill development through Accessory Dwelling Units while maintaining Trumansburg’s unique neighborhood characteristics. These are in the process of development and are anticipated to be completed by the end of 2022.
