Le Moyne College is a private Jesuit school with over 3,500 students on a 160 acre campus that emphasizes education that nourishes the whole person. EDR’s 2010 site plan for the Coyne Center reflects this holistic approach by incorporating the sustainability and biological theme of the science center into the surrounding landscape. The design features eco-swales, bioretention facilities, pedestrian paths, vehicular parking, seating terraces, and native mass plantings. The sloped site presented a number of opportunities and constraints for our design. In close coordination with our client we rose to the challenge of both; the site plan takes full advantage of dramatic views of the surrounding community, while also complying with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Stormwater General Permit and City of Syracuse Stormwater ordinance. The permitting process required application to two municipalities as the campus straddles municipal boundary lines. This project achieved a LEED™ Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
